Dichotic summation of loudness with small frequency separations

چکیده

Subjects gave magnitude estimates of the loudness of monaurally presented pure tones (1000, 1040, and 1080 Hz) and dichotically presented pairs of tones (1000 Hz to one ear plus 1040 or 1080 Hz to the other). For each monaural frequency or dichotic pair, the magnitude estimates approximated power functions of sound pressure; moreover, the monaural and dichotic loudness functions were separated by roughly a constant 10 dB, like analogous functions for monaural and diotic stimulation (same frequencies to both ears). These results imply that dichotic addition of loudness is linear in sones.

Loudness of low-frequency pure tones lateralized by interaural time differences.

Directional loudness is that phenomenon by which the loudness of a sound may vary according to the localization of its source. This phenomenon has been mainly observed for high-frequency sounds, for sources located in the horizontal plane. Because of the acoustic shadow of the head, the left and right ear pressures are modified depending on the source azimuth and the global loudness resulting f...

Binaural summation and lateralization of transients: a combined analysis.

Subjects judged the loudness and the lateral position of dichotic transient signals, which were presented at equal and unequal levels, synchronously and asynchronously, to the two ears. Binaural loudness summation of clicks does not obey a law of linear addition: It is partial at low level and superadditive at high level. Supersummation is greater for interaurally delayed clicks than for coinci...

Range and regression, loudness scales, and loudness processing: toward a context-bound psychophysics.

How does context affect basic processes of sensory integration and the implicit psychophysical scales that underlie those processes? Five experiments examined how stimulus range and response regression determine characteristics of (a) psychophysical scales for loudness and (b) 3 kinds of intensity summation: binaural loudness summation, summation of loudness between tones widely spaced in frequ...

Lateralization by frequency for repeating sequences of dichotic 400- and 800-Hz tones.

Subjects made lateralization judgments involving dichotic sequences of 250-ms tones, which alternated in frequency between 400 and 800 Hz, such that when one ear received 400 Hz the other ear received 800 Hz, and vice versa. With sequences consisting of 20 dichotic tone pairs there was a strong tendency to lateralize each fused tonal percept toward the ear receiving the 800-Hz signal. In certai...

Comparison of loudness models for time-varying sounds

The loudness of a sound depends, among other parameters, on its temporal shape. Different loudness models were proposed to account for temporal aspects in loudness perception. To investigate different dynamic concepts for modeling loudness, predictions were made with the two current loudness models of Glasberg and Moore [J. Acoust. Soc. Am. 50, 331–341 (2002)] and Chalupper and Fastl [Acta Acus...
